The Guyana Telephone & Telegraph- sponsored National Indoor Hockey championships will climax tomorrow evening but hockey fans have been treated to several exciting matches over the past three days at the National Gymnasium on Mandela Avenue.
The second evening of matches Thursday saw Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) Tigers pushing to the lead in the women’s competition with another unbeaten run while in the men’s first division, Hikers and Old Fort remained deadlocked as they seek a showdown with GCC in the final after the Bourda side edged out Old Fort 5-4 in their critical encounter.
The senior match saw GCC captain Devin Hooper leading the score sheet with a double including a brilliant solo run six minutes into the second half while Trevon Smith, Peter DeGroot and Stuart Gonsalves added one each to the tally.
John Abrams was on fire with a hat-trick for Old Fort and has proven to be one of the most lethal strikers in the competition. He received valuable support from defender Aderemi Simon who scored from a penalty corner set play.
The ever-improving Saints also chalked up their first win with victory over Old Fort in the men’s second division while favourites Hikers continued their march to the final.
The most entertaining match Thursday evening ended in a 3-3 draw between Hikers and GCC.
GCC’s Eric Hing was the star for his team while Reginald Harper and Aroydy Branford were on target for Hikers.
Sean Sookhai scored a double as Saints scored a 4-2 win over Old Fort in the other men’s second division tie.
Yonnick Peters and Leroy Jack also scored one goal each for Saints Dwight McCalman and Onassis Fraser were the scorers for Old Fort.
The GCC veterans made light work of Old Fort with a 10-1 drubbing after Philip Fernandes was bang on target with a hattrick while Alan Fernandes, Rawle Davson, Damon Woodroffe, Marcus Fiedtkou and Devin Hooper all scored a goal each for GCC.
Old Fort’s lone goal came from striker John Abrams.
The Hikers Divas put up a fierce battle against pre-tournament favourites GCC Tigers, in the ladies competition but the Tigers scrapped home with a 4-3 victory.
Tigers goal scorers were Carol Caine, Sonia Jardine, Kerensa Fernandes and Ulrica Sutherland.
Hikers secured their goals off the sticks of Cora Towler, Tremayne Junor and Maria Munroe.
Matches continue this evening at the National gymnasium with the finals in all four divisions set for tomorrow evening at the same venue.
