Dr Vivienne Mitchell-Amata, a consultant anaesthetist, shook up the National Cultural Centre and won the Miss Guyana Renaissance crown and title last Saturday, as the pageant ended three years of dormancy.
The pageant could be described as having woken up last Saturday when 12 mature, professional women ranging from educators to nurses dazzled with their passion, intellect and fashion.
This year’s pageant was held under the theme ‘Visions of our Culture’ as the contestants showcased creativity, cultural awareness and the accomplishments of the mature Guyanese woman.
After months of stringent rehearsals, the sixth edition of the pageant saw the 12 contestants being scored by a panel of five judges. The first segments of the pageant were the Talent Piece/Cultural Presentation where the contestants presented an original item. This was worth 100 points. They then individually did drama presentations, piano recitals, steel pan performances, dramatic poetry, singing and cultural dances. The next phase of the competition was the Business Attire where the contestants modelled office clothing. This was worth 80 points.
When the curtains rose for the second segment, the audience was dazzled by the evening gowns in black, white and shimmering colours. This was worth 80 points.
Preliminary judging was completed and special awards were handed out. Gillian Trim took home the Ms Congeniality and Best Cultural Presentation awards. Michelle Alphonso took the Most Improved Contestant Award. Desiree Alleyne won the Executive Award and Christine Atherly went home with the Ms Photogenic Award.
The top four contestants: Anita Wright-Ross, Christine Atherly, Vivienne Mitchell-Amata and Gillian Trim were then each given a question worth 100 points. At the end of the night, it was Dr Vivienne Mitchell-Amata who was deservedly crowned Ms Guyana Renaissance 2012.
Her unforgettable piano recital of calypso and folk music, eye-popping business attire, jaw-dropping evening gown and nailing the final question and answer segment, gave the evening to the victor – Dr Vivienne Mitchell-Amata.
The other contestants were Diana Swan-Lawrence, Monica Thomas, Cheryl Hopkinson, Atala Sampson-Clay; Michelle Alphonso, Marisha Bowen, and Linda Clarke.
In attendance were special guests including Yvonne Hinds – wife of the Prime Minister, Mayor of the City of Georgetown Hamilton Green and the Minister of Human Services and Social Security Jennifer Webster.
The next Ms Guyana Renaissance Pageant will be held in 2014.
