It rained goals on the third night of the Guyana Telephone &Telegraph national indoor championships with Old Fort inflicting an 11-3 victory over Georgetown Cricket Club in the men’s first division while GCC Tigers hammered Innovators 13-0 in the ladies contest Friday evening at the National Gymnasium on Mandela Avenue.
The GCC players who looked comfortable in the earlier matches found themselves on the receiving end against a destructive Old Fort line up.
Aderemi Simon led the assault with six goals, John Abrams hit home four and Richard Heyliger one for the victorious Old Fort side.
Peter De Groot netted a double and Orland Semple one for GCC.
GCC, however, rebounded to edge out arch-rivals Hikers 5-4 with Semple and DeGroot scoring twice and Steven Xavier once for the Bourda side. Robert France netted a helmet-trick for Hikers. GCC Tigers ladies team took revenge for their male side against the youthful Hikers Innovators with several players from the national female squad showing form.
Sonia Jardine led the way with four goals followed by Shebika Baptiste and Kerensa Fernandes two each while there were one apiece for Gabriella Xavier, Tricia Fiedtkou, Carol Caine, Trisha Woodroffe and Ulrica Sutherland.
In other ladies action, Spartans suffered two defeats at the hands of Divas and Tigers.
They lost to Divas 2-3 with Maria Munroe (2) and Daniella Martin (1) scoring for the winners while Samantha Fernandes and Aliyah Gordon scored one goal each for the Spartans who also went under 1-3 to the Tigers 1-3 with Gabriella Xavier, Shebika Baptiste and Sonia Jardine scoring one each for Tigers. Anastacy Sardinha scored for Spartans.
In the second division competition, Hikers mauled Old Fort 8-4 with Colonel Heywood scoring a hat-trick. Michael Harding and Ayoydy Branford added two goals each and Randy Hope one for Hikers.
Onassis Fraser scored twice for Old Fort while Mark Fraser and Richard Heyliger netted one each.
GCC got the better of Saints 5-1 with Steven Xavier (2) and Mark Sargeant, Peter de Groot and Teron Smith scoring a goal each for GCC while Kevin Edwards scored the consolation goal for Saints.
In the veterans’ category, GCC beat Hikers 5-2. Philip Fernandes scored three goals and Alan Fernandes two for GCC while Devin Munroe scored the double for Hikers.
The final round of preliminary matches were played off last evening while the finals in the four categories will be contested this evening at the same venue to be followed by the presentation of prizes.
