The third edition of the 10-kilometre team, relay road-race will be held this morning beginning on Carifesta Avenue.
The event will usher in the 2012 Inter Services Athletics Championships (ISAC) which will be hosted by the Guyana Police Force (GPF) at the Police Sports Club ground, Eve Leary.
The event is scheduled to begin promptly at 0600hrs in front of the Police Officers Mess on Carifesta Avenue. Each team will comprise five competitors (four male and one female) and they will be required to run five legs during the course of the event.
The turnaround point is the stop light at the University of Guyana Road (the access road to the University of Guyana) and the race will be concluded at the Police Officers Mess. The 10km (10,000m) course will be divided into five legs. The three male athletes will run 2000m while one male athlete will complete a 3000m leg. The lone female athlete on each team will be required to complete a 1000m leg.
The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) won the event last year, driven by national long distance maestro Cleveland Forde. Forde passed up competing at the University of the West Indies Half Marathon where he is the defending champion to help his team defend their road relay title.
The GDF team is also expected to include Tyshon Bentick and Jamal Chisholm and the battle will be between their two top female distance athletes Carlissa Atkinson and Ashanti Scott for the lone female place on the team. Forde ran the longest leg in last year’s event and is expected to do so once again this year.
The GPF team will comprise former ISAC 5000m champion Dennis Horatio, Kevin Bailey, Trevor Scotland, Edward DaSilva and Tracy Moses. The GPF team will be reserving their CARIFTA and South American Youth bronze medallist Janella Jonas for the track events. Horatio is expected to go head-to-head with Forde on the 3000m leg. Apart from the GDF and the GPF the Guyana Prison Services and the Guyana Fire Services are also expected to compete.
Following the road race, the ISAC will continue on Tuesday with finals in some long distance events including the men’s 5000m as well as the 100m preliminaries and a few field events at the Police Sports Club ground Eve Leary.
