Justices Naresh Harnan, Sandra Kurtzious and Navindra Singh, Guyana’s newest appointed puisne judges, yesterday took their oaths before President Donald Ramotar to uphold the constitution in their new functions.
In a press release sent out yesterday, GINA stated that President Ramotar, making remarks at the ceremony, said he is of the opinion that these appointments will lead to a reduction in backlogged cases and inadequate numbers of jurists, which has confronted Guyana’s judicial system for some time.
According to the release, when asked about the appointment of additional criminal judges to further expedite the backlog of trials, Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall stated, “I have no doubt that once the need is recognized for an additional judges on the criminal circuit that one of possible these judges or one of the existing judges will be assigned to increase the compliment of judges dealing with the assizes.”
The release further stated that all three judges, each of which will be serving in the High Court Division, vowed to serve the people to the best of their ability with efficiency and impartiality.
