The Becian Stars federation dethroned Calphays federation by three points to become the new champions of the 2012 Ashton Alleyne Athletics Championships (AAAC) formerly known as Youth Congress Championships Sunday at the Police Sports Club ground, Eve Leary.
Becian Stars accumulated a total of 269 points to claim victory while Calphays finished three points short on 266. Webmays was third with 199 points while Salcah finished fourth with 176 points.
Tevin Garraway, who the Athletics Association of Guyana failed to find funds for to send to Argentina, showed his pedigree
by claiming the sprint triple at the event. Garraway ran away with the under-16 100, 200 and 400 metres finishing in times of 11.1s, 22.8s and 54.2s. The young speedster also won two out of three 4×100 metres for his federation with both being come-from-behind wins. National under-23 200 metres champion Elton Bollers was also in the thick of things claiming a sprint double of his own when he won the male under-20 100 and 200 metres by wide margins in times of 10.9s and 22.1s.
ALBA games 800 metres silver medalist Wayne Harlequin returned to the track in dominant style as he coolly ran away with the men’s 400 metres in a time of 50.1s.He also won the 800 metres event and placed second in the men’s 200 metres final with a time of 22.6s.
On the distaff side, youth champion Jevina Sampson made a return to the track after a quadriceps injury earlier in the year but placed second in both the under-16 female 100 and 200 metres to her cousin Tirana Mitchell.
Mitchell, who exploded on the scene at a development meet earlier in the year, won the events ahead of Sampson quite comfortably clocking 12.1s in the 100 metres and 25.8s in the 200 metres. Sampson clocked 12.2s and 26.00s respectively.
Local distance queen Alika Morgan also made a successful showing winning the female Open 800 and 3000 metres events easily at the event. All eyes will now turn to the Schools Nationals where the likes of Mitchell and Sampson will go head-to-head again.
