PNCR Leader David Granger lauded the Ebenezer Congregational Church as “a beacon of Christianity” when he attended the 150th anniversary of the East Coast Demerara church on Sunday.
The church, which serves the communities of Ann’s Grove, Bee Hive, Clonbrook, Dochfour and Two Friends, was founded in 1862 and celebrated anniversary on October 28, a press release from the party said.
Granger told the large congregation assembled to mark the occasion that the church was an institution of which the community should be proud. He recalled that one of the first acts of the 76 free men and women proprietors who purchased Ann’s Grove Village 163 years ago in 1849 – only 11 years after Emancipation -was to donate and dedicate a plot of land to erect the Ebenezer Congregational Church.
“Congregationalism came to this country through the London Missionary Society to minister to its enslaved population over 200 years ago. It has a proud record of the propagation of the Christian gospel especially in the post-Emancipation period,” the release said. The Congregational faith, as enshrined in the Constitution of the Guyana Congregational Union embraces the belief that all believers, regardless of race, gender or station in life are equal before God.
Granger also congratulated the Church’s Women’s Union on the celebration of its centenary which was observed on the same day.
