Five cyclists have been selected to represent South Georgetown (District 13) at this year’s national schools track and field, cycling and swimming championships.
The five were selected following competition held earlier this week in the National park.
The five cyclists, Jhabari Ming, Jason Jordan, Hamzah Eastman, Niall Kingston and Shariah Melville earned their spots on the team following outstanding performances.
Melville, the only girl on the team, made a clean sweep of all events in the girls’ Under-14 category which included the 400m, 800m, 1500m, and 3000m races. The Dolphin’s Secondary student also won the gruelling 5000m.
Ming, also a student of Dolphin’s Secondary, won the 1000m and the 1500m boys’ Under- 14 events.
In the boys’ Under 15 category Tucville’s Jason Jordan ruled the roost in the 1000m and 1500m while Kingston and Eastman shared the wins in the boys’ Under-20 category.
Eastman placed first in the 1500m but was second to Kingston in the 1000m and 3000m while Kingston also won the boys’ open 5000m.
The National Schools’ Championships will be held from November 19 – 23. South Georgetown will compete against 15 other districts from across Guyana, in track, field, cycling and swimming.
Track and field will be held at the National Stadium Providence, while the swimming aspect of the championships will be held at the National Aquatic Centre, Liliendaal.(Tamica Garnett)
