The much anticipated Pegasus Open tennis tournament will serve off tomorrow at the courts of the Pegasus Hotel, Kingston.
The tournament will involve competition in 10 categories including the newly introduced novices singles and doubles categories.
Players can also enter in the men’s and ladies singles, men’s doubles, the mixed doubles, men’s 35 singles and men’s 35 doubles while the juniors can have their chance in the boys’ and girls’ 18 singles.
Notwithstanding the addition of two new categories, the competition’s 10 categories reflect a reduction in the categories usually featured at the tournament with the men’s doubles among other categories, have been omitted this year.
Tournament Coordinator, Jeremy Miller, pointed out that this due to a lack of entries, a deficiency that organisers of the tournament hope can be offset by iniatives such as the introduction of the novice category, which paves the way for lesser skilled lawn tennis players to be a part of the tournament.
“A lot of the players aren’t here anymore, the players have migrated. So you would find we don’t have players for some of the categories. We can’t really do much about it, but we try to get as many persons as possible involved. We have the novices’ category, which is good because we have persons who might want to play but they don’t want to play against the other players. So with the novices’ category, they can play tennis and not be fearful that they would be knocked out in the first round, “said Miller.
The tournament is sponsored by the Le Meridien Pegasus Hotel and is a part of the anniversary celebrations of the hotel which has been Guyana’s premier hotel for over 42 years. (Tamica Garnett)
