Two men, who police say were caught stealing $8M in merchandise in a break and enter robbery, were yesterday remanded to prison.
Desmond McPherson, 20, and Kevin McKenzie, 22, were arraigned on a charge of break and enter and larceny when they appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
McPherson, a miner, of Lot 1 Meadowbrook, and Kevin McKenzie, of Lot 134 Roxanne Burnham Gardens, who is said to be an employee of the Ministry of Agriculture, are both alleged to have broken and entered the business place of Sonobia Butcher, and stolen a quantity of clothes, sunglasses, shoes and over $4M in jewellery. The value of the stolen items, which were the property of Butcher, amounted to $8,750,700 in total.
Prosecutor Kerry Bostwich told the court that on October 31, at about 10:30am, Butcher secured her premises and left to do a business transaction when she received a call about 1:10pm from her brother, who informed her that two young men jumped the fence of the business.
Bostwich noted that Butcher quickly alerted police, who captured the men on arrival at the premises.
In addition, Bostwich, who objected to bail, brought it to the attention of the magistrate the two men have pending matters before two courts. He said that the two men had not showed up for their court appearances and arrest warrants were issued for their arrest.
The magistrate subsequently refused the men bail and remanded them to prison.
They will make their next court appearance on November 9 in Court One, when the case will be called for reports and fixtures.
