The Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment is inviting persons to join the volunteer effort as its recently launched ‘Pick it up Guyana’ jingle and volunteer programme gains momentum.
According to a press release from the ministry, the objective of the programme is to have Non-Governmental Organisations, youth groups and others voluntarily cleaning up their communities and starting environmental initiatives within their communities. They are expected to assist in mobilizing companies, groups and persons interested in becoming advocates for the environment by coordinating anti-littering events at the community level.
To date, the ministry said Lions and Leo clubs, the Girl Guides and PYARG have pledged their support. Sessions will be held to equip volunteers to function as environmental advocates by focusing on education and awareness on waste management and community enhancement. A ‘Training of Trainers’ session will also be held to expand the programme.
Minister Robert Persaud said the campaign is an ongoing process as it aims to change mindsets about littering and the environment. He also encouraged the populace to embrace the programme and to do their civic duty. The minister also pointed out that the way persons treat the environment now can mitigate some of the problems caused by climate change and mitigate their severity.
The ministry said a number of communities and community-based groups, youth groups and businesses have already participated in clean-up and enhancement activities both on the coast and in interior locations. The campaign has also been introduced in schools and even as public awareness and community action continue, draft litter enforcement regulations under the EPA Act have been prepared and are being reviewed.
