The first leg of the 2012 Inter Guiana Games between Suriname and Guyana
Will get underway this morning following an opening ceremony at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
The two countries will compete at volleyball, cycling and chess in the two-day competition which ends tomorrow.
Next week, the Guyana team will travel to Suriname to compete in the basketball and table tennis matches.
According to a press release from the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, the aim of the Games is to “create possibilities for the youths to gather together in order to compete in different sport disciplines, focusing on better sport results and better understanding of each other culture.”
The Suriname delegation was scheduled to arrive at 3pm yesterday while the Technical Meeting between the two countries was scheduled for 7pm last night at the Ocean View International Hotel.
Prior to the Opening Ceremony, the Team Time Trials will get underway at 8am at the National Park.
At 10am the female volleyball will be contested at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall with the male volleyball players swinging into action two hours later. Cycling will resume at 2pm with the road race on the West Bank of Demerara while simultaneously chess will be played at the Ocean View International Hotel. Today’s activities will close with the second round of volleyball action at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall at 5 and 7pm.
Meanwhile, gold medalists at this year’s Junior Caribbean Cycling Championships, Paul DeNobrega (junior) and Michael Anthony (juvenile) will look to add more hardware to their collection when they spearhead Guyana’s six-member team in the cycling events.
DeNobrega and Anthony will team up with bronze medalist at the Junior Championships which was held in the Dominican Republic last month, Raynauth Jeffrey, junior star rider Raul Leal and females Toshawna Doris and Marica Dick to try and help Guyana retain their IGG cycling title.
