Top lawn tennis player Leyland Leacock inflicted a double bagel defeat on Seanden David-Longe when the Le Meridien Pegasus Hotel Open tournament commenced Friday night at the hotel’s courts.
Leacock won 6-0, 6-0 in a men’s singles match of the competition which followed the opening ceremony.
Ryan Panday, using his sliced serve effectively, easily defeated Mindat Lalbeharry 6-1, 6-0 to book a place in the next round of the men’s singles.
In the men’s over 35 singles, veteran Harry Panday scored a straight set 6-4, 6-1 win over Albert Madramootoo while Nicola Ramdyhan, fresh off the Inter Guiana Games Tennis Championships, scored a quick win over Orlis Caines.
Earlier at the opening ceremony, president of the Guyana Tennis Association, Ramesh Seebarran, conveyed gratitude to sponsors of the tournament, the Pegasus Hotel.
An annual fixture on the GTA’s calendar the Pegasus Open over the years has grown to be one of the most anticipated tournaments in the tennis fraternity. This year the tournament is being celebrated as a part of the hotel’s 42nd anniversary.
Seebarran urged players to make this tournament yet another successful one by adhering to code of conduct and showing good sportsmanship at all times.
Pegasus Leisure Facilities manager, Arnold Sukhraj, speaking on behalf of the hotel, said the management of the hotel was happy to uphold their corporate responsibility adding that they will do whatever it takes to help develop tennis in Guyana.
