(Trinidad Express) A 30-year-old fireman and his 65-year-old mother were found chopped to death yesterday afternoon in the living room of their Arima home.
Also found dead was the family’s dog. The pitbull had also been chopped several times about the body.
A motive for the killings has not as yet been determined by police, but residents in the area said they believe that the murders may have been as a result of a legal squabble over property.
The death of Linis and Kevon White of Olton Avenue, Arima, has taken the country’s murder toll for the year to 339, according to an Express tally.
Investigators reported that shortly before 2 p.m., neighbours saw the dog lying dead in the yard. This prompted them to call out to the woman and her son several times but, after getting no response, they contacted the Arima Police Station and officers went to the home where they found the mother and son dead.
The woman’s husband is a retired police officer who lives abroad, said investigators.
When the Express visited the scene yesterday evening a large crowd had gathered as crime scene investigators, along with officers from the Homicide Bureau of Investigations (HBI), processed the scene.
Neighbours said the mother and son were both well-known in the community and questioned who would want to carry out such a ghastly act.
Kevon White, they said, had only become a fire officer last year and was attached to Piarco Fire Station.
“Everybody know him (Kevon) in the area. Since he small he always raising his pitbulls and thing. Who will want to kill them?” one woman asked.
Also visiting the scene were ASP Worrell, Insps Rampersad and Lawrence, Sgt Hernandez, Cpl Jones and PC Pinder.
Autopsies are expected to take place at the Forensic Science Centre, Federation Park, St James today.
