The owner of Julius Variety Store, which occupied the bottom flat of the two-storey building at 135 Regent Street that was gutted by fire early Sunday morning, is still to determine his losses.
Julius Mentis told this newspaper yesterday that his estimated was in the millions since he was not able to save anything from the store.
The cause of the fire is still unknown but Mentis said he had video footage from the store that the police are analyzing to aid with the investigation. When asked if he had any idea of what the footage contained he said he did not have a chance to view it.
When this newspaper revisited the scene yesterday, insurance personnel were carrying out their investigations. Mentis, who was also at the scene, further stated that he will try to rebuild his business at the same location once the investigations are complete.
C and C Prestigious Styles that was housed in the upper flat of the building, was, also gutted by the fire. Firefighters managed to contain the fire to the building.
Chikere Stewart, the wife of the owner of C and C Prestigious Styles had told Stabroek News that they received a call at about 3.20 am alerting them to the fire and rushed down to the location.
Stewart also stated that the fire appeared to have started at the storefront of the Julius Variety Store. She also mentioned that they were fully insured.
