Munroe takes over from the late, former commissioner of Police Henry Greene who died in a road accident close to two months ago. During, Greene’s tenure as president, Munroe had served as the general secretary while on previous GTTA executive compositions, he functioned as assistant secretary and vice president.
The former two-time national men’s singles champion said that he was confident that the executive body elected to serve will be able to achieve all the goals that they have set for table tennis in Guyana.
“Every time you are cohesive and united in a cause you can achieve it… and I see no reason why we can’t achieve what he have set out to accomplish,” Munroe said.
The other elected members of the GTTA following Sunday’s AGM are senior vice president Dr. Pradeep Balram (formerly junior VP), junior vice president Patrick Triumph, general secretary Linden Johnson, treasurer Deidre Edghill and assistant secretary/treasurers Andrew Daly and Lisa Lewis. There will be an executive meeting next Tuesday to name the council members and members of the various sub-committees.
Munroe stated that under his two-year tenure he plans to coordinate with the other executive members to continue their strategic plan towards the development of the sport locally. According to Munroe, revenue generation planning will be a critical area if the GTTA hopes to implement some of its initiatives.
One of the main areas that Munroe plans to address is to continue to develop GTTA’s decentralisation programme which they began close to two years ago. Munroe said that at present, there are functioning steering committees set up in Berbice, Bartica, Linden, West Coast Demerara and East Coast Demerara. The ultimate aim is for those committees to one day morph into sub-associations so that the sport can be played at a structured and organised level throughout the country. Munroe said that more assistance needs to be given to their committees at the moment so that they can function vibrantly.
Additionally, Munroe hopes to have an improved club structure under his tenure since he is of the opinion that the strength of clubs is a representation of a strong association.
The club structure according to Munroe will also supplement the GTTA school programme. For that matter as well, Munroe stated that the GTTA hopes to reach more school and coach teachers so that they would be able to implement and sustain programmes at each interested school.
Other priorities on the agenda according to Munroe including to staging more tournaments, giving players more overseas exposure and making amendment to the present constitution.
Munroe also divulged that GTTA is still pursuing the acquisition of its own playing facility and they are currently in conversations with the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr Frank Anthony to join the squash and tennis as the third sport to be played at that national racquet centre.
