Ronnie Chan, 21, a welder, of Central Amelia’s Ward, was yesterday charged with stealing his friend’s smartphone.
Chan was accused of stealing a BlackBerry Torch, valued at $140,000 and the property of Patrick Norwell. He denied the charge and was released on $75,000 bail.
According to Prosecutor Kerry Bostwick, the theft occurred on November 1, at about 12:30pm, at the Linden bus park, while Chan and Norwell were in a conversation.
Bostwick stated that Chan then walked away heading to another location when Norwell discovered the phone was missing.
Norwell then reported the matter to the Stabroek Market Police outpost, which led to Chan’s arrest.
When given the opportunity to speak, Chan related that he was not the only one who stood in the vicinity of Norwell when the phone went missing.
The matter was then transferred to Court 10 for November 9 for reports and fixtures.
