The noise on Sunday evenings on the seawall is so deafening Subryanville residents cannot sleep

After a long and active life well into my nineties, I really only have one wish – to live the rest of my life in peace and quiet, in the company of loved ones. Unfortunately, there is one ugly blot on the landscape of such serenity, and it occurs every Sunday evening, starting at around 5 pm and continuing into the wee hours of Monday morning. My neighbours in Subryanville will know exactly what I am talking about: the public all-night party on the seawall each weekend. Many Subryanville residents have complained to me and asked me to intervene; the noise is so deafening we cannot sleep at night, we cannot enjoy our Sunday evenings, we cannot hear our own thoughts. The entire seawall from the Russian embassy past Bel Air Gardens is full of people partying, hucksters selling drinks and food, and worst of all, boxes blaring music all night long, at the highest volume possible, six or seven different ones each playing something else, preferably something wild and raucous, all at once. The resulting pandemonium across the street is simply horrendous, and it lasts till 3 am.

Neighbours also complain that many of the people urinate against their fences at this time, so that of course there is an unpleasant stench come Monday morning – not to mention the piles of trash left behind by the party-goers. It is really unbearable and has been going on for over a year. We have started to dread Sunday, which is after all supposed to be a day of rest! Some people even clear out and spend the night elsewhere, an option not possible to me in my frail state of health. But anyway, why should we be driven from our own homes by the lack of consideration of others?

In the past I and others have called the police to request their intervention; this has proved useless because the moment the police have cleared the area the party begins again. Last weekend we called the police twice but nobody came. It seems they have given up the battle to maintain the peace. Noise nuisance is not permitted after 11 pm, so these people are clearly breaking the law. I think it is time for a more serious intervention, and I request on behalf of my neighbours, many of whom are old as I am and desperately long for peace and quiet on Sunday evenings, that we find a permanent solution to this problem. I understand that people should be allowed to party if they want to, and also that young people don’t have many outlets where they can go and have fun. If the Government does not provide for them, where can they go? Surely there is some area in Georgetown where they can make as much noise as they want all night, without disturbing others. What about the stretch along the old seawall road north of the National Park for instance? There are no houses along there and so the partyers could have their fun without inconveniencing others. We who love quietude would be very grateful!

Yours faithfully,
Eileen Cox
