Police yesterday released businessman Paul Daby Snr without charge, several hours before scheduled Habeas Corpus proceedings were called in the High Court.
Daby’s attorney Mark Waldron confirmed yesterday that sometime around 9 am, he received a telephone call from a member of the Chambers of the Attorney General advising that his client had been released. The businessman was released without having to post bail.
As a result, when the matter was called later in the High Court, Waldron advised the court that he was withdrawing his application seeking to have the Guyana Police Force show cause why his client should not be released from custody.
Police on Tuesday issued a wanted bulletin for the city businessman for questioning in relation to the recent executions of Ricardo Rodrigues and his bodyguard Marlon Osborne.
Waldron told Stabroek News in an invited comment, “something is clearly wrong” with the actions of the police who published the wanted bulletin before attempting to make contact with Daby. While describing the whole situation as unfortunate, Waldron said he had been instructed to file libel action against the police and this newspaper.
Stabroek News had carried the contents of the wanted bulletin in its Wednesday edition.
The attorney noted that what was done to his client (having his photo on the front page of a newspaper) was embarrassing particularly because Daby has significant assets and conducts business with persons “all over the region”.
Daby is among several persons who were detained within the last week over the two killings. Like him, the others were released, but on bail, without charge after their lawyers approached the High Court.
