The home of businessman and attorney Motie Singh was yesterday left in total disarray after a burglary, for which two men are now in police custody.
Singh yesterday told Stabroek News that the break-in may have taken place during the course of Thursday afternoon through to the wee hours of Friday morning.
He explained that he secured and left his Lot 67 Robert Street, Better Hope, East Coast Demerara home on Thursday and it was around 4 am the following day that he received a phone call from his neighbor, indicating that they had seen two men fetching items from the house.
“They called me and said they saw these guys coming out with bags. My own suitcases they packed and fetched things out,” he stated. Singh explained that when he arrived at his home a few minutes later, some of the stuff was lying on the street and in the yard, as the perpetrators fled the scene after being confronted by neighbours.
However, one of the two men was found lying in some bushes a short distance away, hidden behind a bag. Police later held a second man, suspected to be his accomplice.
Singh said that on the streets were suitcases filled with food stuff estimated to be worth more than $50,000, a pressure pump, tank and a toaster.
Also missing from the home were a cellular phone, video camera, digital camera, printer, desktop computer and Singh’s passport number R0139715.
“Down to my ice-cream and chocolate in the fridge these men gone with. That is sad,” he added.
Singh also expressed disappointment at the failure of the police at Sparendaam Police Station to respond in an urgent manner, even after they were told that one of the bandits was caught and was being held by neighbours.
“A guy said that he called the police just after 4 and none was available. I subsequently call at 4:30 and was told that no rank was available. I expressed my disgust and anger and told them if they come now, they will be able to apprehend the criminal… until almost 5 the police came,” he stated.
Singh said if he could not recover anything else, he is hoping to have his passport returned to him as this is a very important document.
