Deaf Theatre Guyana (DTG) presents ‘Tales and Legends of Guyana’ next Saturday, November 17, at the National Cultural Centre.
The show, which will have an all-deaf cast, will include such tales and legends as Anansi and Snake, Okonorote and Jumbie Story; Tadja Festival and drums will also be included.
President of the Deaf Association of Guyana, Sabine Mc Intosh told this newspaper that more than 50 deaf individuals will be dramatizing the Guyanese folklore. This dramatization, developed by members of the DTG, is the signature event of the association.
She said the purpose of Tales and Legends of Guyana is to “link the deaf community to the hearing community.” She added that she considers the presentation a “contribution of the deaf culture to the Guyanese people,” promising that Guyanese will not be disappointed if they attend.
Mc Intosh further stated that the presentation is not a front for the deaf community to gain “pity but to show that there is much talent in the deaf community.” Tales and Legends of Guyana will emphasize the inspirations and aptitudes of the deaf community, thereby, bridging the gap between the deaf and the hearing.
The show starts at 20:00 hrs and tickets which cost $1,000 are available at the National Cultural Centre, the Theatre Guild and Nigel’s Supermarket.
