The Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GT&T) on Friday handed over a cheque for $1.9 million to Merundoi Incorporated, to assist in sponsorship of the Radio Serial Drama “Merundoi” and administrative expenses of the Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), which specialises in behaviour change communication.
A statement from Merundoi Incorporated quoted GT&T Public Relations Officer Allison Parker as saying at the handing over that the company has supported Merundoi from its inception, while she congratulated it for the impact the radio drama is having on the public.
Executive Director of Merundoi, Margaret Lawrence, in thanking GT&T, was appreciative of the continued sponsorship and urged the private sector to emulate GT&T’s performance of social responsibility.
She acknowledged that the sponsorship is timely and in response to Merundoi’s need to keep the radio drama on air. Lawrence added that NGOs in Guyana struggle to achieve their mission and can only succeed if they are supported by the various sectors, the statement said.
The radio serial drama was launched on October 16, 2006 and it is now the longest running radio drama in Guyana and the Caribbean, the statement noted, while adding that its current focus is on gender-based violence.
