The Ministry of Amerindian Affairs distributed ATVs and other equipment to boost mobility and livelihoods in several Region Nine villages, during a recent outreach exercise.
According to a Government Information Agency (GINA) press release, Permanent Secretary at the ministry Nigel Dharamlall recently led a team to the area where he presented All Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) to the Toshaos of Achawib, Bahaizon, and Rupunau in the Deep South, Rupununi, provided for under the Amerindian Development Fund. The latter two had only received one ATV each.
Aishalton’s Toshao Bernard Conrad received a radio set for communication, a chain saw and a solar panel while footballers in the south central district received monetary assistance for the Guyana Teachers’ Union district championships, GINA said.
According to GINA, earlier in the year several villages in the South Rupununi benefited from a $5M Nissan Frontier vehicle to be used in the health sector.
Fly Hill and Quatata, satellite communities received a vehicle valued $4.25M that was bought with sums from the villages; $1M each, and government which provided $2.25M.
In addition, a 40-horsepower outdoor engine was given to Sebai and Kamwatta, in the Moruca sub-region; Region One received a minibus valued $3.2M and Region Two communities St Deny’s Mission and Mainstay each received a minibus.
More recently, Minister of Amerindian Affairs Pauline Sukhai distributed two pick-up trucks costing $5M to Karasabai and Shulinab in Central Rupununi.
At Shulinab the vehicle will be used to take children from that village and satellite villages Meriwau and Quiko to the St Ignatius Secondary School while Fairview and Kwatamang in North Rupununi and Tipuru, Pai Pang, Tiger Pond and Rukumutu in Deep South Rupununi each received an ATV.
Kwatamang was presented an ATV to be used by the health worker to transport patients and conduct medical visits while Community Development Officer of the Deep South, Regis James, was given an ATV to execute his duties.
The minister also handed over a 40-horsepower engine each to Apoteri and Rewa as they are located near to the Rupununi River.
