The amateur segment of this month’s 26th edition of the Guyana Fight Night Pro Am card will feature the best of the local boxers matching gloves with some of Trinidad and Tobago’s best amateur pugilists.
A six-man team of four boxers and two officials from the Twin Island Republic will invade the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall on November 30.
“The Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) will be adding some international flavour to this month’s card” said GABA’s president Steve Ninvalle yesterday.
“What we have done, we have invited four top boxers from Trinidad to face four of our best pugilists.”
According to Ninvalle, the reigning junior Sportsman of the Year and ALBA bronze medalist Imran ‘Magic Khan (bantamweight) along with Laured Stewart (welterweight), Stephon Gouveia (lightweight) and Eon Bancroft (middleweight) will be in action.
Khan will take on Aaron Cumberbatch, Stewart will clash with Leon Nottingham, Gouveia will match gloves with Michael Alexander while Bancroft is scheduled to face Declan Calliste.
“All these guys (Khan, Stewart, Gouveia and Bancroft) have been trained by the Cuban coach (Francisco Hernandez Roldan) and are now hard at work at the Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis Gym,” he added.
He also highlighted that this month’s amateur segment will be the first time in the two-year initiative that international amateur boxers will be competing on the card.
Ninvalle also expressed his gratitude to the president of Trinidad and Tobago’s Amateur Boxing Association president, Cecil Ford and adviser to Ford, Boxu Potts.
The professional segment of the card will see Guyana’s welterweight champion, Iwan ‘Pure Gold’ Azore putting his title on the line against Mark Austin.
The under card will feature Gladwin Dorway versus Cassius Matthews (six-round junior welter-weight),Rudolph Fraser versus Richard Williamson (six-round featherweight and Kishawn Simon versus Patrick Boston in a six-round catch weight bout.
The monthly card is an initiative of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) in collaboration with the Sports Ministry and the National Communications Network (NCN).
