Guyana suffered a heavy 5-0 defeat at the hands of hosts Trinidad and Tobago in their opening match of the World women’s Hockey League first round yesterday at the National Hockey centre in Tarcarigua, Port of Spain.
Neighbouring Venezuela also went down to tournament favourites Canada 12-0 in the tournament’s opening fixture.
Guyana’s women were hoping to start on a positive note but were down 2-0 at half time. No individual scores were available at the time of going to press.
In the opening match, Canada proved too strong for minnows Venezuela as the South Americans trailed 0-5 at half time.
Brienne Stairs hit home four goals while Caashia Karington and Marian Dickinson scored two goals each.
The other scorers were Abigail Raye, Poonam Sandhu and Katherine Logush.
Uraguay also inflicted an 8-0 drubbing on Barbados in the final match of the day.
Guyana will be in action again today against Canada at 14:30 hours, with hosts Trinidad and Tobago playing Uruguay in the second match of the day while Venezuela will take on Barbados in the night cap.
The six teams are competing in a round robin tournament with the top three countries advancing to the second round as a lead up to the women’s World Cup to be played in 2014 in the Hague, Netherlands.
