The fourth batch of orthopaedic students graduated with distinctions and credits from the Georgetown Public Hospital Corpora-tion’s year-long Orthopaedic Technician Training Course.
A Government Information Agency (GINA) press release said the course had two components: one for new students who aimed at becoming orthopaedic technicians and the other, an advanced programme for technicians that included orthopaedic scrub training.
The newly trained technicians will assist orthopaedic surgeons in the operating theatres and clinics, and during ward rounds. Technicians have also been trained to prepare the instruments needed for total knee and hip replacements among other orthopaedic procedures.
Director of Medical Education Dr Madan Rambaran, in his address at the graduation ceremony said that there was a dearth of orthopaedic technicians but now students can choose to pursue this field of study, as Guyana adds to its resources skills pool.
