The Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha (GHDS) urges the nation to join Hindus as they participate in Deepavali, an act of worship to Laxmi Devi “for the fulfilment of their economic aspirations.”
In a press GHDS President Reepu Daman Persaud said Deepavali is the loveliest of its festivals, dating back to the pre-vedic age. “It occurs on Kartik Amawasya when the Goddess Laxmi Devi is worshipped. Maha Laxmi, the cosmic Queen emerged from the churning of the ocean (Sagar Manthan) on a full blown lotus,” the release said.
In Guyana the festival was observed in estates and villages and over time it has become a national celebration with the introduction of motorcades on the eve of the festival.
As a major festival Deepavali provides the opportunity for persons to demonstrate their skills and artistry in the decorating of floats for the motorcade.
The GHDS has been the pioneer of the motorcade and it is regarded as the biggest event in the country. The Sabha hopes that the festival will continue to contribute to the unity of people and invites the nation to share in devotees’ prayers for health, strength and prosperity.
