Dear Editor,
I must write to express my thoughts on what I perceive to be a very poorly planned Diwali Motorcade in the East Canje/New Amsterdam/East Bank Berbice area on Sunday evening. First of all, the string of vehicles that passed my area minutes before the 9 o’clock hour could hardly be described as a motorcade; it appeared more of a race to me – a race against time because they were late!
The public lined the roadways; there were expectant children, waiting anxiously to see these beautifully decorated vehicles that pass only once per year, and they waited and waited and waited. When they did pass, it was a race against time; there was hardly any time to savour the moment. Imagine, these intricately designed, well- lit vehicles with persons on them depicting the Hindu Gods and Goddesses, fly pass in seconds. Nobody really gets to enjoy the whole thing.
I believe these events should be better planned. I do not know how it is in other parts of Guyana, but every year it is the same thing in Canje and the planners need to get their act together. Come on! Every year they plan these things.
It does not take rocket science for these planners to strategically position the vehicles so that there are gaps between them and they drive more slowly, especially when they pass the heavily-populated streets lined with hundreds of people. And they are late every year, hence the race to the Canje Welfare Ground.
Yours faithfully,
Leon Suseran
