-Club raising funds to erect concrete facilty
The Demerara Cricket Club’s Day of Sports will bowl off today at the club’s ground, Lance Gibbs and New Garden streets, Queenstown from 10:00am.
The event is being held to raise funds to assist in the erection of a concrete practice facility and a roll on cover for the pitch area.
According to Kashif Amsterdam, treasurer of DCC, the club aims to provide its members with quality facilities which will help tremendously in preparing Guyana’s future cricketers for the international arena.
“We at the club always wanted a roll on shed for the pitch but were never able to build it so we came up with the Day of Sports which is a fund raising event which will give us the necessary finance so that it could be built, Amsterdam stated. He added that the shed it to protect the cricket pitch from the rainy weather pointing out that a lot of practice sessions and even important matches cannot be held whenever it rains.
“The shed was a very good idea to start with because sometimes we would hardly get to practice and we would normally have to hold back very important matches and other times we could not be able to practice because of the soppy state of the pitch,” he added.
Today’s scheduled events will include a T20 match with the DCC team led by Chris Barnwell opposing a select Georgetown XI.
The club has also scheduled a five-a-side floodlit football match as well as some track and field events.
The DCC team will come from :-Travis Dowlin, Andrew Lyght Jr., Christopher Barnwell, Derwin Christian, Gajanand Singh, Paul Wintz, Dennis Squires, Totaram Bishun, Andre Stoll, Jamal Hinckson, Cohen Ismond, Omesh Danram, Jahron Byron and Dexter George.
