Defending men’s doubles champions Jeremy Miller and Jason Andrews opened with a win against Mario Niamatali and Anthony Ameerally while Anthony Downes and partner Owen Lewis went down to Nicholas Fenty and Leyland Leacock as competition heated up in the Pegasus Tennis Open tournament over the weekend at the Pegasus Hotel’s courts.
Miller and Andrews scored a clear-cut two-set 6-3, 6-3 win over last year’s men’s 35 doubles champions.
However, the match of the day was the Fenty/Leacock, Downes/ Lewis encounter which surprisingly was won by the Fenty/Leacock pair.
Downes and Lewis, playing together for the first time, managed to keep it together and assemble a 6 – 4 win the first set but lost the second set 4 – 6. In the third and decisive set Downes and Lewis took a 4 -1 lead only for Fenty to produce some astounding forehand winners which stunned the crowd and kept Downes and Lewis at bay.
They managed to level the set at 5-5 as Downes and Lewis appeared to lose steam while Fenty and Leacock rode their momentum to a 7 – 5 win.
Also on Saturday, Andre Lopes and his nephew Daniel Lopes eliminated Sandeep Chand and Godfrey Lowden from the men’s doubles competition winning 6- 4 4-6 6-2.
Lowden had better luck in the men’s 35 singles where he defeated Harry Panday 6 – 3, 6 – 3. (Tamica Garnett)
