Prime Minister Samuel Hinds recently visited several mined-out camps at Mahdia that had been re-cultivated with acacia plants, as the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) intensifies its efforts to replant vegetation in the area.
According to the Government Information Agency (GINA) press release, Hinds said the replanting is to demonstrate that reclamation is possible.
GINA said replanting was also done at Isseneru, Noitgedacht, Aranka and Arakaka.
Hinds’ team visited the site that he and GGMC officers had replanted in 2009. He lauded the efforts to replant the mined-out sites as “necessary, since it is environmentally-friendly and allows for future generation to utilise the lands…these areas which were a mining pit will also be used to mine again as the area still has potential.”
GINA said the “Acacia mangium is a multi-purpose plant that allows soil fertility by fixing nitrogen. It is also suitable for intercropping fruits and vegetables such as pineapples and cassava.”
