Neither Lady Saw nor Tanya Stephens knew that the message of the ‘Night of the Divas’ concert they had been booked for was an anti-domestic violence one, but both singers said they were pleased to be associated with such a show.
At a press conference held yesterday at the Princess Hotel, in the absence of Spice and Pamputtae, who the media were told were asleep, both Lady Saw and Stephens also said that it was the first time they were being involved in such an event.
Stephens who has never performed the National Stadium revealed that she didn’t find out about the message of the concert until she got on board. But she reiterated that she is happy to be a part a concert which reminds persons about the seriousness of the matter and hopes persons continue to advocate against domestic violence.
“I have been to other shows that stand up for different things but not shows standing against Domestic Violence…,” Stephens said.
Lady Saw also said, “I have seen shows about competitions like dancehall queen and so on, but not this.”
Asked for her views on the issue, Lady Saw replied “I would personally tell [women] them to not take any kind abuse from men.”
Stephens, meanwhile, said, “I detest men who abuse anybody… we have to work to help those [who are] abused. Women who are abused stay because they are not independent.”
Stephens then sang a few bars from her hit song “These Streets”, while Lady Saw sang from her intuitive and well-loved hit “No Less Than a Woman”.
Jamaican singer Gaza Slim and Trinidadians Destra Garcia and Denise Belfon is also advertised on the concert line up. However, none of the women were there, nor did the promoters say when they were expected.
Sponsors of the show include Banks DIH Ltd, West Indies Spring Water and Princess International Hotel.
Representatives of West Indies Spring Water and Princess International Hotel said they were happy to be part of such an event, especially one that stands against domestic violence.
