De Jesus Naraine, a prisoner on remand for charges of break and enter and larceny and escaping lawful custody, yesterday managed to slip out of the Georgetown Magis-trates’ Court building under the noses of police.
Naraine’s freedom was short-lived, however, as he recaptured hours later.
It is believed that he escaped from Court One, before his cases were transferred to another court.
An eyewitness said that at the time of the man’s escape, no police officer was present at the door of the courtroom. It was not until prisoners were taken over to Court Five, where the cases were transferred, that it was realised that the man had escaped.
Another eyewitness recalled seeing Naraine leave the courtroom “like any other person would” and heading down the stairs, without handcuffs or shackles, in a slow manner. He is then reported to have entered an unknown taxi and fled.
It was Naraine’s lawyer, attorney Paul Fung-a-Fat, who brought the escape to the attention of Magistrate Leron Daly. He said that his client had escaped from the court house and he requested to have his name removed from the case jacket as the man’s legal representative.
Fung-a-Fat told the court that Naraine had been sent US$400 from his mother in the United States, which he said would have been used to take care of the legal affairs and transactions during his trials for various charges.
Naraine previously escaped while being in custody of an investigator, this newspaper was told.
An investigation had been launched into the man’s escape and he was recaptured yesterday afternoon.
