Guyana women’s hockey players will be looking to end their campaign on a high note when they take on Venezuela in their final match of the World League at the National Hockey Centre in Tarcarigua, Trinidad today.
Although trailing the Venezuelans in the points tally, the Guyanese will fancy their chances following a 1-1 draw against Barbados Wednesday and they eventually secured two points after beating their Barbadian counterparts 3-2 (Win/Draw) in a penalty shootout to determine the positioning on the points table.
Guyanese striker Kerensa Fernandes scored for her team almost at the sound of the final whistle from a penalty corner after the Barbadians had taken the lead as early as the 20th minute when Kemi Brewster scored from a field goal.
Both Guyana and Venezuela are ranked 58th by the International Hockey Federation (FIH) and the Guyanese would have had their fair share of success against their Venezuelan counterparts in recent matches.
The match is set for 13:00 hours Guyana time, the first of three matches carded on the final day of the tournament.
A win for Guyana will help them to a fourth place finish with five points but with no chance of advancing to the second round of the World League as only three of the competing nations will advance.
Venezuela also have a very slim chance in advancing even if they beat Guyana by virtue of have fewer goals than host Trinidad and Tobago who are currently in third position.
Favourites Canada who have recorded 37 goals in their four matches will battle with Uruguay who are tied with Canadians on 12 points but with 2 goals to their credit.
Both teams are already assured of a place in the next round but an intriguing showdown looms between the two sides.
The top three nations in this six-team tournament will advance to the second stage of the World League in search of a place in the Women’s world cup slated for 2014 in the Hague, Netherlands.
