The Guyana Manufacturers and Services Association (GMSA) mourns the sudden passing of Dennis Morgan, CEO of Denmor Garment Factor, even as it remembers him as a visionary and shrewd businessman who was highly respected by his colleagues and others.
In a press release, the GMSA Board said without a doubt Morgan was the leading manufacturer of men’s ladies’ and children’s outer and underwear in Guyana “and demonstrated his insightful business acumen many years ago by securing production contracts for several big-name international clothing lines including US-based Victoria’s Secrets.”
Over several decades in the business, he never lost his optimism that Guyanese manufacturers could hold their own against competitors from North America, Europe and Asia, the GMSA said, adding that he took tough lessons learned growing up in poverty and proceeded to make his mark on the world.
“Dennis went on to lend his vision to several business support organisations including the GMSA and the Chamber of Commerce, and became a relentless proponent for the development of our own human resources,” it added. Morgan actually “walked the talk” and at his own company located at Coldingen East Coast Demerara, Denmor maintained a staff of over 98 per cent women from surrounding poor rural communities.
According to the release, Denmor provided skills training with a view to reducing poverty and empowering women to become more assertive and productive. He stepped up his employee welfare management programme by adding HIV/AIDS counselling to the long list of societal interests and achievements. In the last decade, Morgan was awarded for Lifetime Achievements by the same business support organisations, particularly for expanding the market for his value-added textile products beyond these borders.
The GMSA says Morgan was one of Guyana’s truest philanthropists. He was “well loved and highly regarded especially in his business’ host communities” and with his passing, the GMSA has lost a dependable and determined partner.
The group extends condolences to his family, relatives employees and friends.
