(Trinidad Guardian) A 27-year-old woman who confessed to fatally stabbing a Chaguanas father of three after a domestic dispute last weekend has been released by police. On Friday, investigators received instructions from the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions to release the woman who killed 28-year-old Anthony Lee Sing.
Police said although she was released their investigation is ongoing. Last Saturday, police responded to neighbours’ reports of the screams coming from Lee Sing’s Sushilla Drive, Chase Village home, and found Lee Sing’s corpse in a pool of blood in a corridor. He bore stab wounds to the chest, abdomen and hands.
Attorney for the accused woman Larry Williams said the police report was taken to the DPP on Wednesday for instructions. Although unsure about the reason for her release, Williams said the evidence, the witness statements, and the woman’s medical reports showed she acted in self-defence.
“I spoke to the police officer yesterday [Friday] and he told me that the file went to the DPP on Wednesday and she was released today. The only thing I can assume is that they came to the conclusion that the killing may be self-defence.
“The other thing is that they have only 72 hours to investigate while they keep someone in custody. Anything longer than 72 hours, they have no choice but to release the person. However, they can continue to investigate and months after they can make an arrest again,” Williams said.
