Guyana’s and Women’s International Boxing Association (WIBA) bantamweight champion Shondell “Mystery Lady” Alfred winged out to Mexico yesterday on a quest to clinch her second world title.
Alfred, 31, will take on Mexican, Zulina Munoz for the vacant World Boxing Council (WBC) super flyweight title in Mexico City on November 24.
During a telephone interview with Stabroek Sport yesterday, Alfred and her coach, Seibert Blake, spoke of her preparation and her confidence level heading into the biggest fight of her 13-year professional career.
“Shondell’s preparation went very well in terms of getting her prepared for this world title fight” said Blake.
“We did a lot of hard work, we went for weeks training three times a day, we worked with a conditioning specialist the last two weeks, we also did a lot of sparring with some of the top local amateur and professional boxers.
“She is about 90% ready for this fight and we have a week in Mexico to reach that 100% mark” Blake added.
Alfred’s record stands at 13 wins and five losses while the 25-year old Munoz who is known as La Loba (the she-wolf) has a record of 35 wins (24 KO’) one loss and 2 draws.
Munoz has held the WBC Silver Female bantamweight title since June of last year and clinched the WBC Silver Female super flyweight title two months ago.
La Loba is a seasoned and tough campaigner.
“The Mystery Lady” intimated that she respects her opponent but is confident of returning to Guyana with the title.
“I am high in confidence, I don’t want to get too overconfident because we know the type of fighter I’m going to face, but I’m looking to come out as world champion at the end of the day”.
The title became vacant after Anna Maria Torres decided to start her family. Torres widely acknowledged as one of the best female boxers of this era.
