Former West Indies cricketer Deryck Murray will be the guest speaker at Transparency International Guyana Inc’s first annual fund raising dinner to be held on Friday evening at the Pegasus Hotel.
Murray, the Chairman of the Trinidad and Tobago Transparency Institute – national chapter of Transparency International – will headline the event which is meant to raise funds to finance the work of the organisation for the coming year.
Murray, a former world class wicketkeeper and a Cambridge Scholar, will deliver an anti-corruption speech at the dinner and will also share the experiences of the Trinidad chapter in promoting transparency and accountability, said a statement from Transparency International Guyana Inc.
President of Transparency International Guyana Inc, attorney at law Gino Persaud and British High Commis-sioner Andrew Ayre will deliver brief remarks at the dinner.

The release said that Murray was first selected for the West Indies Cricket team while still at Queen’s Royal College. “He went on to represent the West Indies in 62 Test matches between 1963 and 1980. He first played for Trinidad & Tobago at the age of 17 and was captain of Trinidad & Tobago from 1976 to 1981. A wicketkeeper-batsman, he was also Vice-Captain when the West Indies team won cricket’s first two World Cups in 1975 and 1979. In 1963 and 1975 he was awarded the Trinidad & Tobago Sportsman of the Year Award and was also honoured in 1975 with the Chaconia Gold Medal for his many outstanding achievements,” the release said.
It added that Murray graduated with BA (Hons) in Industrial Economics from the University of Nottingham, England and read Economics and History at Cambridge University (Jesus College) where he was awarded a cricket Blue and was captain of Cambridge University in 1967.
“He served in the Foreign Service of Trinidad & Tobago in the period 1978 to 1989. The major part of this period took him to the United Nations in New York, where he was Vice-Chairman of the Fifth Committee and Chair-man of the Committee for Programme & Coordination,” it said.
He joined the financial services industry in England in the early 1990s and was the Affinity Marketing Manager of one of the largest insurance companies. “On his return to Trinidad at the beginning of 2001, he took up a post at the Head Office of Guardian Life of the Caribbean where he was Vice-President, Employee Benefits until May 2008. He now serves as a Consultant, Employee Bene-fits,” the statement said.
He served as the President of the Trinidad & Tobago Cricket Board (TTCB) and Director on the Board of Directors of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) in the period 2005 – 2009.
Murray is Chairman of the Trinidad & Tobago Transpa-rency Institute (the national chapter of Transparency Inter-national, the global coalition against corruption).
