Some REDjet customers are expected to start receiving refunds from this week when payments will be made by officials from the Ministry of Public Works.
Principal Assistant Secre-tary in the Ministry of Public Works Derrick Jodhan told this newspaper yesterday that payments will be made by cheque to customers on the provisional list as they await the completion of the other list of customers.
He stated that while the money was available, certain systems had to be put in place before the payments begin. Payment by cheque was seen as a better method since it facilitates easy tracking or verification, Jodhan added.
Jodhan had told the Government Information Agency (GINA) that around 70% of the claims submitted by Guyanese here have been approved by REDjet.
The list of names compiled by the ministry after advertisements earlier this year was sent to REDjet for approval.
The low cost carrier REDjet, which attracted many passengers in Guyana and other parts of the Caribbean, suspended flights on March 16 and has applied for bankruptcy.
The Barbados-based carrier had suspended operations after competition from other airlines and claims of unfair subsides.
Attempts to get financing from the Barbados and Guyana governments failed and the airline remained grounded.
