Georgetown’s top first division club Ravens racked up its second win on Sunday evening easing to a comfortable win against Eagles on the third night of the Phillip George Legacy Basketball tournament on the Burnham outdoor basketball court.
Ravens completed a 69-45 victory, utilising many of their reserves to make the contest against the Eagles more challenging. Ravens led 32-22 by the half-way mark before outscoring Eagles 47-23 in the second half to capture their second straight win of the tournament. The Orangemen had secured a five-point opening night win against Pepsi Sonics on Friday evening.
National guard Rodwell ‘Kobe’ Fortune chalked up a team-high 15 points to accompany his nine rebounds and five steals. The other lethal backcourt Ravens player Stephon ‘Penny’ Henry, added 14 points five rebounds and four steals. Reserve Keon Hayles also saw some playing time and seized the opportunity to add 10 points to the Ravens’ total while grabbing four rebounds.
Eagles player Quincy Easton scored 14 points and pulled down five rebounds while emerging junior small forward Kevin Higgins was three points short of a double-double after adding seven points and 12 rebounds. Higgins also managed five steals for the Eagles.
Eagles were blown away on Saturday by Georgetown’s newest powerhouse squad Bounty Colts by 55 points. After remarkably posting 53 points in the first half, Colts closed out the Eagles 91-36 for this first win of the tournament. Shelroy Thomas, who led his team in scoring with 18 points, also swiped five steals and grabbed four rebounds while his brother Sheldon Thomas added 13 points and five steals. Former two-time junior national captain (2006-2007) Dave Causway also registered an impressive performance of 17 points, six steals and four rebounds for the Colts while current junior nationals Nikkoloi Smith and Dominque Douglas contributed 14 and 10 points respectively. Douglas also managed eight rebounds while Dave Plass, another current junior national player had nine points and five boards. For Eagles, Linden Smith added 13 points and six rebounds, while Mark Wills contributed 13 points and nine rebounds.
Republic Bank Nets also managed to secure two wins over the weekend by defeating Colours Panthers and Guardians respectively. Nets prevailed 64-49 against Colours Panthers thanks to forward Drumson McCaulay (10 points six rebounds) and former Maccabees captain and guard Hodayah Stewart (eight points) after a low-scoring first half (15-8 Nets). Omari Walton scored 19 points for the Panthers while Yannick Wade finished with an identical double-double of 12 point 12 rebounds.
During their 64-58 win against Nets, Darrion Lewis was the hot-hand man, scoring 14 points, while Stewart added 11 and McCaullay 10 points and nine boards to his credit. The Phillip George Legacy Basketball tournament will continue at the Burnham outdoor basketball court this weekend beginning with games Friday evening.
