Assistant Commissioner of Police, David Ramnarine has sued the state- owned Guyana Chronicle for $5M over a recent publication in which two miners made allegations against him.
A writ which was served yesterday gave the Guyana National Newspapers Limited, the publishers of the newspaper ten days to enter an appearance in the action.
Attorney at law Khemraj Ramjattan initiated the legal proceedings on behalf of Ramnarine who was stripped of his Divisional Commander post earlier this year after he publically questioned the allocation of $90M during last year’s general elections.
He is presently stationed at Police Headquarters, Eve Leary.
According to the indorsement of the claim Ramnarine (the defendant) is seeking damages in excess of $5M for libel and defamatory statements published/ printed on November 6 under the title “Corruption allegations leveled against Superintendent Ramnarine”.
An injunction restraining the repetition/publication of the said or similar statements concerning Ramnarine by the defendant is also being sought.
