-court hears
Christopher Greaves, who is accused of stealing a car from the compound of the Rent-A-Tent company, abandoned the vehicle after the owner trailed him into the city, a court heard yesterday.
Greaves, 21, of Soesdyke, was charged at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court with stealing a Honda Civic, valued $3M and listed as the property of Christa Rahaman.
It is alleged that he stole the car on November 19, at Rahaman’s Park.
According to prosecutor Seon Blackman, Rahaman had just driven into her driveway at Rahaman’s Park when she was approached by Greaves, who appealed to her for a job at Rent-A-Tent.
Blackman said after hearing Greaves, Rahaman went to her office to conduct a business transaction but left the vehicle with the keys in the ignition.
After a couple of minutes, she saw Greaves in the front seat of the vehicle driving it out of the compound.
Rahaman, Blackman said, got into another car and gave chase through Alexander Village then to the Tiger Bay area, where Greaves allegedly got out of the vehicle and ran. He was later apprehended by public-spirited citizens.
Blackman said that after Greaves was caught, an arrest was made by police officers. He objected to bail, saying that the accused provided police with a fake address.
As a result, Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry refused bail for the accused.
The case was adjourned to November 30.
