The Ministry of Amerindian Affairs has committed $11M to build bridges over creeks to link several villages in Region Eight. According to a Government Information Agency (GINA) press release, the sum will be used to bridge creeks at Kato, Chiung Mouth, Kurukabaru and Kamana. During a recent visit to Kato, GINA said, Minister Pauline Sukhai said the community will get $4.5M to build a new bridge at Arrow Creek, replacing the one that had fallen into disrepair. The bridge will link Kato, Chiung Mouth and Kurukabaru and is a crucial link during the rainy weather, GINA added.
During discussions with the residents, Sukhai also pledged to provide another $500,000 to rehabilitate the Chiung Mouth end of the road leading to the bridge, while villagers will provide the labour for the project.
Meanwhile, at Kamana, villagers will be given $6M to build three bridges to assist farmers. The funds will be disbursed after the village submits an estimated cost to the ministry, GINA said.
