A Corentyne man died while two others were injured after the car they were travelling in turned turtle on Airstrip Road, Mahdia, around 6:45 hrs as the men were heading to work yesterday.
Keith Paul, 40-years-old, of No 1 Road, Corentyne, Berbice died on the spot after he was pitched out of the car. Injured are his co-workers, Shawn Simon, 40 years of 111 Miles, Mahdia, and Michael Prince, 50 years, of Belmont, Mahaica. Both men are now patients at the Georgetown Hospital where Prince is said to be in a critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). He suffered injuries to his back.
The police said in a press release that the men were travelling in a car, PNN 8226, when the accident occurred.
The car was proceeding along the roadway when it turned turtle resulting in Paul being thrown from the vehicle.
Paul’s mother, Desiree Paul, told this newspaper that her son, who has been a miner for several years, left for work on Saturday. She said that she learnt of the accident after someone called her from Mahdia and told her.
She noted that the caller told her that her son was heading to work in the backdam when the car toppled, killing him instantly.
Prince’s brother, Errol Prince, could not provide much detail about the accident but said he spoke to his brother on Sunday. His brother told him he was leaving for work in the interior on Monday.
It is still unclear as to who was driving the car at the time of the accident but investigations into the matter are ongoing.
