Greenwich Park Primary, West Coast Demerara (WCD) was awarded a trophy for the Most Improved Schoolyard yesterday at the Healthy School Competition award ceremony at Stewartville Primary, WCD.
Executive Director of the Environmental Community Health Organisation (ECHO) Royston King said he was pleased with the improvements in schools as it relates to environmental sustainability. He said that the competition has generated a positive outcome, resulting in Greenwich Park being the school with the most improved schoolyard.
He also said that ECHO appreciates working in schools because “they facilitate a good flow of creative energies necessary for new ideas,” and also that the environment depends “on the future generation.”
Fourteen schools in Region Three were involved in the competition and were assessed on a clean schoolyard, proper disposal of garbage, the conditions of waste receptacles and any further enhancement to the environment.
A teacher of Greenwich Park Primary asserted that the school performed well because of help from the Parent-Teachers Association (PTA) at the school along with Greenwich Park Primary ECHO Club members.
The PTA assisted in providing funds to hire a cleaner to keep the school environment clean.
The teacher further stated that “it is a normal routine to keep the school clean and also members of the ECHO Club would be on the lookout for litterers.”
Leonora Primary was awarded second place in the competition, while Stewartville Primary came in third. Uitvlugt Primary was also awarded a prize for its ability to keep its environment clean.
