A handyman was yesterday charged with stealing a necklace belonging to Dr Faith Harding, who was his employer.
Akeni Perry, 36, was released on $50,000 bail at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, where he denied the charge that he stole a gold necklace, valued $300,000, from Harding’s home.
Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry was told that Perry allegedly committed the theft between October 31 and November 1, at Anira Street, Queenstown, when he was employed by Harding at the home.
Prosecutor Kerry Bostwick stated that on October 31, at about 8pm, Dr Harding left the necklace on the vanity in her bedroom and proceeded out of the home to perform a few errands. Perry was left in the house at the time to do some maintenance work.
Bostwick told the court that the following day, Harding was preparing to go out when she realised that the necklace was missing and she made checks about the room.
He added that she also asked Perry about the whereabouts of the necklace but he denied having knowledge of it.
Harding later contacted the police and investigations led to Perry’s arrest.
Bostwick had no objections to bail, and the case was adjourned until December 7, when it will be called for reports and fixtures.
