Dear Editor,
It was very interesting to read in your Saturday issue that our lone world boxing champion Shondell ‘The Mystery Lady’ Alfred was forced out of a world title fight in Mexico because she failed a medical. The long and short of the story is that Miss Alfred, who would have been battling for the bantamweight title on Saturday, was diagnosed as being pregnant and the Mexican authorities refused to let her fight.
I am as distressed at this turn of events as any other Guyanese. However, I hope your newspaper would be able to clear up a small mystery.
I’ll ask four questions: (1) Was Miss Alfred given a medical examination before she left Guyana? (2) Which doctor examined her? (3) Was she found to be pregnant then? (4) If the answer to the third question is yes, then why was she allowed to go to Mexico?
I’d be happy if you could clear up this little mystery which may include the role of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control in this little mess.
Yours faithfully,
RT Trim
