The Guyana Burn and Health Care Charitable Foundation (GBHCCF), a York, Canada-based charity yesterday handed over two ambulances to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
The decommissioned ambulances, which were donated to the GBHCCF by the Regional Municipality of York, were handed over at the Canadian High Commission, High and Young streets, Kingston.
Chairman of the Regional Municipa-lity of York, William Fisch, recalled that the Deputy Mayor of Richmond Hill, Vito Spatafora, approached about the need in Guyana and he decided to donate not one but two ambulances to the country.
The Canadians were very proud to be involved in such a venture and as such decided to also donate 500 children’s books to the Paediatric Ward of the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Canadian High Commissioner David Devine stated that the donation is one way in which Canadian Guyanese are giving back to Guyana. Guyanese who have migrated to Canada are donating to the GBHCCF to provide better medical facilities in Guyana and improve the emergency response system at hospitals throughout the country.
Speaking on behalf of a Member of Parliament of Canada Devine mentioned that the affiliation between the High Commission of Canada and the GBHCCF serves a need and contributes to the saving lives in Guyana.
Harry Harakh, President of GBHCCF, urged ministers of Guyana to encourage the people to partake in the development of medical care in the country. He commended El Dorado, Caribbean Airlines and the Bank of Nova Scotia for their generosity toward GBHCCF.
Prime Minister Samuel Hinds also made remarks.
