Police investigations have revealed the pedestrian killed in the accident which occurred on the Houston Highway on Sunday evening was 59-year-old Tony Singh of Belle West, Canal Number 2, West Bank Demerara (WBD).
Residents of Houston, who were familiar with the man, had stated that they knew him as “Polly”, and were not aware of his real name.
A visit to Belle West revealed that the man did not actually reside at the house which is occupied by his children and the mother of his children.
According to a resident of the area, Singh and the woman were involved in a relationship some years ago, but they had long separated. He stated that while Singh would visit his children and the woman from time to time he actually resided at the Meadow Bank Wharf where he worked as a night watchman and boat washman. He said that the man was destitute.
The resident described Singh as a heavy drinker and speculated that his habitual drinking probably led to his demise.
Shortly after the accident, a resident of Houston who claimed to be a friend of Singh had said, “During the day he does usually be through Back Street, Houston drinking with he fren ‘Bran’. He and Bran bin a good friend. I surprise he aint reach out hey already,” she said.
Another resident of Belle West claimed to work along with Singh at the wharf, and confirmed that the man slept and spent most of his time at the wharf since he had nowhere else to go.
Singh was killed after being struck by minibus BJJ 6765 last Sunday evening at about 8.15 pm, as he was attempting to cross the western carriageway of the East Bank Highway in Houston.
The man was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The driver of the bus is still in custody assisting with further investigations.
