Two close relatives of Shaquille Grant yesterday took the witness stand at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court as the preliminary inquiry (PI) into the murder charge against one of policemen accused of murdering him began.
Frances and Gordon Grant, the grandmother and grandfather of Shaquille Grant, testified yesterday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, who is presiding over the inquiry.
Also testifying yesterday was Detective Constable Phillip Bowman.
Police Constable Terrence Wallace, Lance Corporal Warren Blue and Special Constable Jamal Lewis are charged with fatally shooting 17-year-old Grant on September 11, 2012, during an operation in Agricola.
Only Wallace has been formally charged with the teen’s murder, while arrest warrants have been issued for the other two, who are believed to have fled the country.
Police have sought help from Interpol and other organisations to find the men.
Grant’s shooting sparked public outrage at the actions of the police and there was also a protest at the George-town Magistrates’ Court, after his relatives expressed disgust at preferential treatment being given to Wallace while in custody.
The inquiry is due to continue on December 4.
